Introducing the Microbes and Social Equity Working Group: Considering the Microbial Components of Social, Environmental, and Health Justice
The Microbes and Social Equity (MSE) Working Group explores the critical connections between microorganisms, human health, and social equity. Microbiomes—diverse communities of microorganisms—play a vital role in the well-being of individuals, societies, and ecosystems. However, access to resources like nutritious food, clean water, and effective healthcare significantly impacts our engagement with these beneficial microbiomes.
Our mission is to bridge microbiology with social equity research, education, and policy to better understand the interplay between microorganisms and societal health. We aim to broaden education by developing interdisciplinary curricula and community outreach programs that enhance awareness of microbiomes and their significance. We also seek to diversify research by encouraging studies that explore the impact of socioeconomic factors on microbiome health, incorporating diverse community perspectives. In addition, we advocate for policy changes by collaborating with policymakers to improve access to essential resources and promote environmental justice initiatives. Through these efforts, the MSE Working Group seeks to ensure that the benefits of microbial wealth are accessible to all, fostering healthier communities and ecosystems.
