Twenty Important Research Questions in Microbial Exposure and Social Equity

Discover the link between microbial communities and social equity.

Social and political policies, human activities, and environmental changes significantly influence how microbial communities interact with people. These factors shape the exposure different social groups have to beneficial or harmful microorganisms, placing microbial exposure within a vital socioecological justice context.

To promote equitable access to beneficial microorganisms and enhance societal and ecological resilience, the authors identified 20 key research questions that span seven crucial themes: sociocultural interactions, Indigenous community health and well-being, humans and urban ecosystems, human psychology and mental health, microbiomes and infectious diseases, human health and food security, and microbiome-related planning, policy, and outreach.

The aim of this work was to summarize this emerging field, stimulate impactful research, and guide funders and policymakers in fostering social equity in microbial exposure. By exploring these critical questions, perhaps society can build healthier communities and more resilient ecosystems.
